Dutch frigate nabs suspected pirates

Nine suspected pirates have been apprehended off the coast of Somali in an EU Naval Force mission led by the Dutch frigate HNLMS De Ruyter.

On Tuesday she was tasked to find a suspected pirate group reported by a Panama flagged merchant vessel off the coast of the east African country.

The Dutch ship’s helicopter located a pair of high-powered skiffs about 120 nautical miles east of Eyl. As the rotary-winged aircraft approached material was thrown overboard and the skiffs split up in an escape attempt.

The first skiff was stopped by Dutch assets aboard the De Ruyter. The second was located and stopped with the support of a helicopter from the EU Naval Force flagship ESPS Mendez Nunez.

All nine suspected pirates are being held on board the De Ruyter for further investigation and evidence collection to fully assess the possibility of prosecution. Both attack skiffs were confiscated.
