Another Gulf of Guinea pirate attack


The Benin exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Gulf of Guinea has recorded its fourth pirate attack in a week.

Praesidium International reports the Marshall Island flagged tanker Jane was fired at from a speedboat which aborted the attack when the tanker started evasive manoeuvres.

A regular course resumed an e hour later with the vessel heading full steam toward Lagos. NNS EKulu was dispatched to intercept the tanker and the vessels linked south of the port city and proceeded to Lagos. This latest incident is the fourth in the 0ast week in the Beninese EEZ, an area with a dramatic increase in piracy related events this year and incidents recorded up to 220 nautical miles from shore.

“It is believed the attacks were perpetrated by at least two pirate action groups (PAGs).The area south of Lomé-Cotonou-Lagos is to be considered am extreme risk,” according to a Praesidium statement.
