The South African Navy (SAN) has appointed South Gauteng High Court judge Lucy Mailula as honorary captain.
The ceremony was held at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town on Friday.
Mailula has been involved with the South African National Defence Force’s Defence Legal Services Division since 1999. She is also an alternate Chairperson of the Court of Military Appeals.
With a smile, Mailula said: “It is really a great honour for me to be bestowed this position of Captain in the Navy. I’m very, very proud to be associated with the Legal Satellite Office in Cape Town.”
An Honorary Captain is expected to inter alia, assist in the maintenance of goodwill, the traditions of the Navy and SANDF, to foster esprit-de-corps and to represent the interests of the SANDF.
They also serve in a ceremonial capacity but are not part of the military operational chain-of-command.
Rear Admiral Robert “Rusty” Higgs, the Flag Officer Fleet, said at the inauguration parade that the sea service “is delighted to have Judge Mailula as an Honorary Navy Captain. It is an appointment of affiliation for someone held in high regard in society who will allow us to facilitate greater relationship between the Navy and the broader society”.
