Rwandan security forces killed 19 people in a group that carried out a deadly attack in a tourist hub in the north of the country, a police spokesman said.
The assailants, mostly carrying traditional weapons like knives, attacked Kinigi sector in Musanze district, where the Volcanoes National Park offers tourists the chance to view endangered mountain gorillas.
In a statement, police spokesman John Bosco Kabera said security personnel pursuing the attackers killed 19 and the death toll from the assault was 14.
“While hunting down those criminals security organisations killed 19 people and captured five others,” he said, adding the hunt for perpetrators was ongoing.
“The situation is contained and we thank residents and local officials for collaboration with security organisations.”
Authorities have not said whether tourists were among those killed or where the attackers came from. Rwanda has previously seen incursions by fighters from the rebel FDLR force eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
