Members of Marievale Military Base donate food parcels to local community

Members of the Marievale Military Base donated food parcels to the Community of Happiness Village on 27 April in Commemoration of Freedom Day 2020.

The SANDF said members saw the need to help the community by donating funds from their own pockets to buy the food parcels for the needy. This was done in support of Chief of the SA Army Objective 6, which is to reach out to the community.

The parcel handover ceremony began with the playing of the National Anthem and the reading of the SA National Defence Force Military Code of Conduct and a prayer by the Chaplain. The main purpose of the event was to deliver food parcels to 86 families. These were not official government sponsored food parcels but food parcels purchased with money donated or collected, from R10 to R50, by serving Army members. The Army members themselves did the shopping and packaging of the food parcels.

The Acting/CC of Operation Prosper Marievale Military Base, Major A. Meisner, explained to the community that the food parcels are to assist them in these tough times of COVID-19, as part of the SANDF’s call to serve and protect the country.

Community Leader, Sbusiso Mazibuko, passed words of gratitude on behalf of the Happiness Village community.

After all the proceedings of the day, the family representatives lined up to receive hot soup, bread, and food parcels.
