DLI soldier dies in Parliament


A woman soldier from the Durban Light Infantry collapsed and died while giving evidence to a parliamentary committee.

The soldier was making a submission on the Defence Amendment Bill to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans.

In a media release the Department of Defence said efforts made by the Metro Ambulance Service of the City of Cape Town and ER 24 emergency service to resuscitate the soldier were unsuccessful. The name of the deceased is being withheld while the department informs her family of her death.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Lindiwe Sisulu and the Chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Godfrey Ngwenya have extended their condolences to the family of the infantrywoman.

The statement added that the soldier had served in the SA Army in the Military Skills Development System and had, after leaving the regular service joined the Defence Reserves.
