US air strike hits al Shabaab

The United States military’s Africa Command (Africom) has conducted an air strike against al Shabaab militants in Somalia.

The air strike took place on 9 July against an al Shabaab checkpoint in vicinity of Hantiwadaag, Somalia, Africom said.

“Al-Shabaab are using checkpoints to threaten, extort and restrict the movement of innocent people in Mogadishu and Lower Shabelle region,” said US Marine Corps Major General Bradford Gering, deputy director of operations, US Africa Command. “Al-Shabaab’s actions continue to impede much needed economic development and progress.”

The command said initial assessment concluded the airstrike killed one terrorist and destroyed an al-Shabaab checkpoint.
