SANDF helps recover looted goods

The South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and other law enforcement agencies have worked together to recover goods that were looted during recent civil unrest in Gauteng.

The SAPS yesterday said law enforcement and soldiers deployed at hostels in Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni and the surrounding areas to recover looted goods. Appliances and groceries were recovered, and suspects arrested.

The SANDF said truckloads of goods – suspected to have been stolen – were confiscated at Nguni hostel in Vosloorus.

Among recovered items were refrigerators, kettles, microwaves, alcohol and piles of groceries items which residents could not provide receipts of purchase for.

While raiding the hostel, SA Police Service members discovered stained banknotes from blown up ATMs. Large quantities of dagga were also seized in the operation.

SA National Defence Force members cordoned off the area and created a safe environment for the SAPS to do the searching. Support to the Police is part of the ongoing Operation Prosper.
