Armed robbers killed 14 villagers on a Lake Victoria island after the residents tried to stop them leaving by boat with goods they had stolen, a local official said yesterday.
Abbas Kandoro, regional commissioner for Mwanza region, told Reuters 17 people were injured in the violence, which took place late last Saturday on Ukerewe district’s Izinga Island.
He said the bandits opened fire on the islanders after the residents tried to stop them leaving with stolen property.
“This was just like a massacre, these people were madmen,” Kandoro said by phone from the fishing and gold-mining northern town of Mwanza.
He called the raid an “historic event”.
Fishing is a leading export earner in Lake Victoria, which is shared between Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
