38 SA police convicted of crime in 2008/9

Police minister Nathi Mthethwa says 38 South African police officers were convicted for criminal offences in the last financial year.

Of the convictions secured in the year to March 31, 2009, 18 resulted in direct imprisonment without an option of paying a fine or the prison sentence being suspended, the minister added.

The South African Police Service Act provides for discharge of officers on account of an effective sentence of imprisonment.

The number of police officers arrested by the Independent Complaints Directorate during the same period was 67, the minister said.

In addition about 90 police personnel were subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings and 10 “were expelled”.
