A Chinese national has been arrested for dealing in rhino horn with an estimated value of R6.6 million.
The 28-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday at OR Tambo International Airport.
“A routine search was conducted and police recovered eighteen rhino horns weighing about 43kg concealed in his travelling bags,” South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks, said.
The man was in transit from Namibia to board a South African Airways flight to Hong Kong.
He is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court for dealing in rhino horn under the Endangered Spices Act on Friday, 25 November 2016.
