7 SAI records border successes

Macadamia base in eastern Mpumalanga is currently home to a detachment from Phalaborwa-based 7 SA Infantry Battalion to execute the border protection mandate handed to the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) by Cabinet.

This mandate has as its primary aims the prevention of illegal immigrants coming into South Africa and stopping smugglers in their tracks, confiscating illicit cigarettes, liquor, counterfeit clothing and footwear as well as preventing stolen vehicles leaving the country.

Foot soldiers now serving in the 48-year-old unit had their long hours of patrolling dense bush rewarded with recent multiple seizures of contraband from Mozambican smugglers. All told, goods worth R827 000 are now under lock and key at the Lebombo port of entry.

Responding to a police alert, another 7 SAI patrol located a stolen Toyota SD double cab utility vehicle at Mbangweni village after the suspects driving it fled when they saw soldiers. The vehicle is presently impounded at Mbuzini police station.

Another police/army collaboration saw a Toyota Hilux Raider recovered at Nkomazi shopping centre, with a suspected vehicle smuggler and driver taken into custody.
