Somali pirates captured a Singapore-flagged and owned container ship yesterday, a maritime official said, and an associate of the pirates confirmed the report.
Andrew Mwangura of the Kenya-based East African Seafarers’ Assistance Programme said the MV Kota Wajar was seized 300 nautical miles north of Seychelles yesterday morning.
Mwangura said the ship, which was headed to the Kenyan port of Mombasa from Singapore, had 21 crew aboard. Their nationalities were not available immediately.
Somali pirate gangs have made millions of dollars in ransom payments since last year and patrols by foreign navies in the Gulf of Aden has failed to end the problem.
