A new training module managed by Operation Sophia and focused on ship’s divers basic is underway at the Croatian Navy Training Centre in Split.
Trainees were selected by Libyan authorities and underwent a thorough vetting process carried out in different phases by EU NavFor Med, security agencies of EU Member States participating in the Operation and international organisations.
After vetting, including medical checks, five Libyan military personnel were admitted to start the course.
The course hosted by the Croatian Navy, will last five weeks and will provide knowledge and training in diving procedures and techniques and lessons focused on human rights, basic first aid and gender policy.
The course is scheduled to finish on December 14.
When complete and if the five make the grade more than 300 Libyan Coastguard and Navy personnel will have been trained by EU NavFor Med.
EU NavFor Med Operation Sophia continues operations focused on disrupting the business model of migrant smugglers and human traffickers, contributing to EU efforts to return of stability and security in Libya as well as train and build capacity in the Libyan Navy and Coastguard.
