Navigation aids for inland waters

SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) CEO Tsietsi Mokhele says it is time for a national debate on inland waterway navigation aids.
Samsa is from this month responsible for all inland waterways, including inspecting boats, licensing skippers and investigating all boating incidents as well as accidents.
Mokhele says SA has 400 inland waterways, 24 large rivers, and about five million people who need to be licensed in terms of skippers` tickets.
He says there is presently no marine aids to navigation inland and unlit jetties and other navigation obstacles have played a role in many boating accidents.
