Milkor promotes new patrol boat, APC and UAV at DSA

Milkor, diversifying from its history as a supplier of 40 mm grenade launchers, is promoting its MN Centurion patrol boat at DSA 2018 in Malaysia as well as its new 4×4 armoured vehicle and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Milkor unveiled a model of its new high speed interceptor at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) show taking place in Kuala Lumpur between 16 and 19 April. Milkor aims to showcase the first prototype during the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition outside Pretoria in September.

According to Milkor, the MN Centurion is a 12 metre long stepped hull, hydrofoil-assisted catamaran design with a lightweight composite structure and a reduced radar signature. The hull design allows high speed as well as stability and fuel economy.
“Designed and configured for multi-role operations, it is ideally suited for long endurance missions. The command and control bridge is shock-mitigated, ballistic-protected and air conditioned, able to house the crew in safety and comfort. The high-speed interceptor craft houses an array of surveillance equipment, communications equipment and weapons giving it a full spectrum of capabilities for any inshore or offshore operation. Milkor designs, manufactures and offers after sales service for Naval and Commercial requirements,” the company said.

The vessel features a configurable aft deck space – it can be used for personnel transport – and can be configured to operate as an unmanned surface vehicle (USV).

The MN Centurion displaces 10 tons and has a maximum range of 700 nautical miles and endurance of five days. Two propulsion options will be available: either two 440 hp diesel inboards or two 350 hp outboard engines. Top speed will be 54 knots with a cruise speed of 30-40 knots.

Weapons options include a 40 mm radar-directed automatic grenade launcher, 20 mm remotely operated cannon or radar-guided missiles.

Milkor is also promoting its new Milkor Surveillance UAV. The company said it is designed for surveillance and long endurance missions and will have a large payload capability. Sensors will include infrared and multispectral cameras as well as a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). A payload bay is also designed to accept customer-specific payloads including Communications Intelligence (COMINT), Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) and Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) equipment. A laser designator/illuminator will be an optional extra.

The UAV is a low wing, T-tail design. A line of sight communications system has a range of 250 km, but it will be also fitted with a non-line of sight satellite communications link for extended range.

Milkor emphasises that its UAV is ITAR free. Two versions will be available – the MA 380 is the larger of the two, with a designed range of 2 000 km and endurance of 20 hours at a cruise altitude of 14 000 feet. It has a wingspan of 12 metres and maximum takeoff weight of 380 kg. Payload will be 80 kg. Maximum and cruise speeds will be 220 and 150 km/h respectively.

The MA 80 is the smaller version, with a range of 250 km and endurance of 24 hours. Cruise altitude will be a bit lower, at 10 000 feet. Wingspan will be six metres, and maximum takeoff weight 80 kg with a 15 kg payload. Cruise speed will be 120 km/h.

Also at DSA, Milkor displayed a model of its 4×4 armoured personnel carrier (APC), which will also be developed into a 6×6 version. The Milkor 4×4 has a V-shaped hull for improved mine protection and a B7 level of ballistic protection. This level allows it to protect the crew against armour piercing rifle rounds. Milkor says it also plans to fit additional forms of protection against Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The Milkor 4×4 has been designed to take eight passengers and two people up front. Various weapons systems will be offered with the vehicle, including a remote-controlled weapon station with automatic grenade launchers.

Grenade launcher production is Milkor’s bread and butter – it has supplied over 60 000 launchers to more than 60 countries over nearly 40 years. Milkor aims to launch new grenade launcher products this year, including a non-lethal launcher as there are huge requirements for crowd control.

Milkor is also offering cyber security solutions as the need for cyber security is growing rapidly.
