Lithuania ship crew members taken hostage

Gunmen attacked a Lithuanian cargo ship off the Nigerian coast and took five crew members hostage, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry said yesterday.
The ship owned by Lithuanian Limarko Shipping Company (LLK) was attacked at the Escravos anchorage while waiting to be unloaded, and five crew members taken away in a speedboat, the ministry said in a statement.
“It’s the first time Lithuania has faced such a hostage problem. We looking into the circumstances of the attack and whereabouts of the crew members,” ministry spokesman Rolandas Kacinskas said.
Nine out of the 14 crew remained on the ship, and none was hurt during the attack, the ministry added. The ship was carrying frozen fish.
