Arleigh Burke to arrive in Simon’s Town tomorrow


United States Navy Aegis-class guided missile destroyer, USS Arleigh Burke (DDG51) will dock in Simon’s Town tomorrow morning at 8.30am.



The SA Navy says the visit of the US ship to South Africa “forms part of the SA Navy`s objective of maintaining and enhancing international contact with United States naval forces.”

The Arleigh Burke made her first port visit in South Africa in Durban and thereafter, proceeded with a passage exercise with SAS Amatola (F145) en route to Simon`s Town.

Admiral Arleigh Albert Burke (19 October 1901 – 1 January 1996) distinguished himself during World War II and the Korean War and served as Chief of Naval Operations during the Eisenhower administration. The USS Arleigh Burke, the lead ship of a class of Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyers, was commissioned in his honour in 1991.
