The Jordan Armed Forces has signed a contract with ADI for the production of 50 advanced armoured combat vehicles.

Paramount Group’s newly announced joint venture with KADDB Investment Group (KIG), Arabian Defence Industries (ADI) is thrilled to announce that the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) has signed a major contract with ADI for the production of 50 of the world’s most advanced armoured combat vehicles, to be manufactured in Jordan.

This first tangible industrial outcome of ADI will see the production of 50 of the Paramount Group of South Africa’s developed Infantry Combat Vehicle, the Mbombe, which represents the latest in armoured and landmine protected technology in the world. The Mbombe is a six-wheeled armoured vehicle that employs an innovative new form of construction, offering outstanding protection, mobility and firepower. It is designed to provide unrivalled protection in class against landmines, IEDs, side blasts and RPG attacks.

Ivor Ichikowitz, founder and executive chairman of Paramount Group, says: “South Africa has been leading the world in armoured vehicle and landmine protected technologies for decades. We have an amazing skills base, we are home to some of the best engineers in the world and they have developed technologies that are used globally and save lives every day. The Mbombe represents the pinnacle in landmine protected vehicles today; this is a product that we are very proud of. It has revolutionised armoured vehicle design and we are very excited to share this technology with our partners.”

The creation of Arabian Defence Industries (ADI), which was announced at the Special Operations Forces Exhibition & Conference (SOFEX), in Jordan, last week, signals an important milestone in the continuing growth of the defence industrial capability in the Middle East. It will deliver world-leading technologies and solutions, from the latest in armoured vehicle technologies to sophisticated aerospace technologies, including modernisation and upgrade capabilities of fighter, fixed and rotary wing aircraft for the specific requirements of defence forces in the region.

This defence industry joint venture will see technology and skills transfer that will enable ADI to position itself as a leading player in the rapidly growing Middle East defence industry. As Ichikowitz notes: “The South African defence industry has become one of the most advanced developers of defence technologies in the world, and Paramount Group today is the custodian of much of this technology. It has always been our philosophy to share technology, transfer skills and to assist countries in driving industrialisation and to create jobs. The signing of this contract provides us with the first concrete step in doing this in Jordan.”

The Mbombe is the first vehicle in its class to use flat hull mine protected technology, and the first to offer such substantial all-round protection against a variety of kinetic and explosive threats. Ballistic protection is provided against 14.5mm heavy machine gun rounds, while it offers similar levels of protection against 155mm artillery burst. Level 4 mine protection is offered against 10kg mines detonating under the hull or wheels. Against IEDs, it can withstand a 50kg TNT blast.
