The South African Military Health Service says it is part of the National Department of Health’s Outbreak Response Team to assist with the possible swine flu outbreak in South Africa.

“As part of this assistance a high level advisory team has been appointed in the SAMHS, consisting of specialists in the fields of microbiology, medical expertise, environmental health, pharmacy and disaster medicine, to provide advice to the Surgeon General of the SA National Defence Force and the National Department of Health,” spokesman Colonel Louis Kirstein said in a statement.

He notes the SAMHS last month proved itself “as provider of last resort during the strike action by the doctors, and is ready to assist the National Department of Health should an outbreak occur.”
