Soldier jailed for murdering colleagues

Sergeant Mpumelelo Hlubi (24) has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars by the Bethlehem Circuit Court for a double murder that happened in February.

Hlubi allegedly shot Lieutenant Thabiso Seithati and Gunner Zakhe Khumalo while driving from the Fouriesburg military base to a temporary base on the farm Kromdraai while deployed on border protection. The temporary base was located close to the Lesotho border.

After shooting the two soldiers, Hlubi apparently dumped their bodies alongside a gravel road and ran away. According to police, an R4 rifle and cellphone were taken from the dead men and the military vehicle all three were in was abandoned on the Lesoba Road.

Hlubi was charged with murder and made two appearances in the Bethlehem Circuit Court before October 18 was set as trial date.

He was this week sentenced to 15 years for the murder of Seithati and 10 years for the murder of Khumalo. The sentences will run concurrently.
