SANDF announces name of soldier killed in bus crash


The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has released the name of the soldier who died in a bus crash on 28 July.

An SANDF statement said that a memorial service has been scheduled for 26-year-old Lance Corporal Gauta Simon Lesekele for 8 August at his home unit of 93 Ammunition Depot. He will be laid to rest on Saturday 12 August after a church service that will held at the Community Hall (section S) in Botshabelo. The funeral service will commence at 07h00.

A total of 34 of the 38 SANDF members on the bus who suffered various minor injuries have since been discharged from hospital with the remaining four still hospitalised with various minor injuries. Four members remain in critical but stable conditions respectively in hospital, the SANDF said.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Honourable Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the Secretary for Defence, Dr Sam Gulube and the Chief of the SANDF, General Solly Shoke have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family members, friends and colleagues of the deceased member and wished the remaining injured members a speedy and healthy recovery in hospital.

The bus overturned on the N12 highway on 28 July whilst the members were on the way from Kimberly to Saldanha. The 55 seater bus was ferrying a total of 43 members from various Units in Kimberley to a soccer tournament when the accident occurred.
