One soldier has been killed and another two injured in a shooting at Air Force Base Bloemspruit.
South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Director: Defence Corporate Communication Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said in a statement that the shooting took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“A member has been fatally wounded, another critically shot, but is in a stable condition in hospital and the suspect is in custody. No further details can be disclosed at this time, until there necessary procedures have been followed,” Mabanga said. “The circumstances leading to the shooting are being investigated.”
The Cape Times quoted Pikkie Greeff, national secretary of the South African National Defence Union (SANDU) as saying the shooter was a guard at the base.
“There was some argument between him and two men about a lady,” Greeff said.
Free State police spokesman Harry Nagel said the suspect handed himself over to guards after the shooting. He faces a murder and two attempted murder charges.
Greeff noted that in 20 years there have been four shootings at SANDF bases.
