An Olifant tank belonging to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) landed on its turret after an accident on Friday.
The 65 ton tank was being driven on a tank transporter truck across Van Reenen’s Pass when the 28-wheel truck lost its brakes. The driver tried to stop the truck at an emergency arrestor bed but the tank was thrown off the vehicle and landed in the road, damaging its turret and closing a lane.
The tank was removed on Saturday afternoon by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and a private breakdown service, according to the Ladysmith Gazette.
The tank was being transported as part of training by the armour school in Bloemfontein. Apparently the female driver and an instructor were slightly injured in the incident, Beeld reports.
The tank was an early model Olifant that is no longer operational and is used for training purposes only.
