New name for A-Mess

Soldiers and other military personnel in Thaba Tshwane now take meals and are housed at the Albertina Sisulu Mess.

The mess, along with food storage, preparation and cooking areas, previously went by the more military name A-Mess on Hendrik Alberts Road. The name change is one of raft in the military ‘”suburb” of the Tshwane metro as part of what Captain TL Makgokgoa, Staff Officer, Army Support Base, Potchefstroom, reports as an “ongoing revamp” of SA Army support facilities to “restore the dignity of members living in military accommodation”.

Eight other buildings facilities in the military area south-west of the Pretoria central business district, originally Roberts’ Heights and then Voortrekkerhoogte before the Thaba Tshwane appellation, are now named “after people who contributed to South Africa’s democracy”.

The names King Shaka, King Sigcawu, Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, General Jacobus de la Rey, Fidel Castro, Steve Biko and Chris Hani are now part and parcel of Thaba Tshwane’s cartography.
