In a military career spanning more than three decades the new boss of the SANDF Joint Operations headquarters has gone from an MK trainee to a two star general leading a major hub in South Africa’s military operations, both internally and continentally.
Major General Thabiso Mokhosi took over command of the HQ from Major General Jabulani Nkabinde during a battalion in review with a colour party change of command parade in Thaba Tshwane last week.
Mokhosi was promoted to the two star general’s rank on acceptance of his new post.
He completed his basic military training in 1985 in Angola and then moved on to an advanced engineering demolition course at Simferopol Military Combined Arms College in the Ukraine the following year before starting and successfully completing a course of operational command and control of mechanized infantry forces at the same college. He then did the ASC-6 course in operational logistics at ASC School in Bareilly, Italy in 1992 before returning to South Africa.
In 1999 he completed the strategic leadership course at the SA Army Peace Mission Training Centre in Thaba Tshwane, certified by Cranefield College.
Mokhosi completed the Joint Command Staff Duties programme in 2000 at the SA Army College and the Joint Senior Command and Staff programme in 2003 at the SA War College. He also successfully completed the then Executive National Strategic programme, now the Security and Defence Studies programme, at the SA Defence College and an added feather in his cap is the international security and strategy course done in 2010 at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.
Apart from his academic qualifications the newly minted two star general has during his uniform career been an instructor for small arms and engineering; base commander in Angola; member of the MK task team in Tanzania that transformed the force into a conventional structure; company commander of the Second Battalion of the National Peacekeeping Force; company commander of 4 SA infantry Battalion; SO1 Research and Development Systems; OC 1 SA infantry Mechanised Battalion.
