Members of the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday paid tribute to the South African soldier who was killed in a friendly fire incident on 3 June.

At 11:30 on 9 June, FIB members gathered at Mavivi Airport in Beni for the sending off parade of the late Corporal Simanga Arthur Khuselo. The MONUSCO Force Commander sent a letter with his deepest heartfelt condolences, which were read by the Force Intervention Brigade Chief of Staff during the parade.

Khuselo will be received by the South African National Defence Force and his family in South Africa, where he will be laid to rest in a dignified manner, the South African battalion in the DRC said. The fallen soldier was sent off with a general salute as the aircraft took off.

Khuselo was part of the Tactical Intelligence Unit deployed to the DRC under Operation Mistral.
