The Department of Defence says it will shortly seek nominations for a permanent National Defence Force Service Commission (NDFSC). The NDFSC was established in terms of the Defence Amendment Act 22 of 2010, assented to by the President on December 9 last year and promulgated in Government Gazette No 33866.
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Lindiwe Sisulu announced in her budget vote speech in May 2009 that her priority will be improved conditions of service for South African National Defence Force personnel. As a result, the minister moved to establish an Interim NDFSC to, amongst other things, investigate and make recommendations for a unique dispensation for the soldiers outside of the regular public service and to investigate the conditions of service of SANDF members and make recommendations in connection therewith.
In accordance with section 62C(1) of the Act, the minister will soon invite interested persons from the South African public, organisations, institutions and civil society at large to nominate suitable members to be appointed as commissioners to the NDFSC.
