A civilian doctor doing community service at the SA Army Infantry School sickbay has been arrested in connection with charges of sexual assault.

The doctor, whose name has been withheld, appeared in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate’s Court earlier this week and, according to the SA National Defence Force’s director: corporate communications, Brigadier Xolani Mabanga, faces charges of sexual assault, including rape.

The offences were apparently committed while the doctor was conducting medical examinations on two female military skills development system (MSDS) volunteers.

Mabanga said the alleged assaults were also still under investigation by police in Oudtshoorn and the SANDF had “invoked its own internal processes concurrent to the police investigation to address the matter”.
“The SANDF is co-operating with the investigation s any legally proven act of ill-discipline is not and will not be tolerated from any member in the employment of the SANDF regardless of their social standing and/or appointment within the organisation,” he said.
