Nine South African Infantry Battalion gets involved in Mandela Day

The South African National Defence Force’s (SANDF’s) theme for Mandela Day this year is “Action against poverty”. Nine South African Infantry Battalion (9 SAI) has taken the theme to heart this year by making this come to life.

The Nelson Mandela 67 minute Home Make Over project was assisted by numerous members of Nine South African Infantry Battalion under the command of Lt Col D. H. Tigele. Leaders in the Makhaza and Mfuleni communities in Cape Town each chose a house to be fully renovated. Members of the unit assisted in renovating two new homes in Makhaza and Mfuleni by doing painting, plastering, roofing, plumbing and electrical work. This work was in collaboration with Goal Super market, Goal Striker, White Star, Iwisa Maize Meal, Selati White Sugar, Fusion and Allsome Rice.

Lieutenant Thabiso Ramathe described the day in saying that Nelson Mandela day is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to take his life’s work forward and change the world for the better. “Nine SAI Bn is taking action to help make a change in our surrounding community. Lending a helping hand to those less fortunate every day. Making a difference in our surrounding has become a necessity to 9 SA Infantry Battalion.”
