Local and internal conflicts are the backdrop to trends and developments in the region. … In a sign of greater determination among regional countries to solve their own security problems, the New Partnership for Africa`s Development (NEPAD) although driven largely by political and economic aims, has security elements referring to peacekeeping in its documentation. It is likely that this will develop in three main areas: peacekeeping operations; crisis early warning; and the non-proliferation of small arms.
