SANDF studies moving the earth

5056

The military has awarded the Defence Decision Support Institute (DSSI), an agency of the Armscor Defence Institutes, a R35 588.66 contract extension to provide system engineering support for an acquisition study for earth moving equipment.

The work is a continuation of a R843 942 contract awarded last year May. The South African Army has long had a programme, Project Pantile, to replace its aging engineer earthmoving and construction equipment. Due to fiscal constraints, the project has to date enjoyed a low priority.

The main mover in the current inventory of the SA Engineer Corps is the 23 metric ton Vlakvark engineer battle tractor. This is a militarised Zettelmeyer platform fitted with a 5-in-1 bucket that allows the vehicle to operate as a dozer, loader, forklift, trench digger and shovel or crane.
