South African armour company Rand Armour is producing advanced armour plates that use a technology called steel composite armour for improved protection and durability in the harshest environments.
Rodney Anderson, Director at Rand Armour, said his company’s armour plates have a special coating and composite material to catch bullet fragments and stop them from causing injuries.
The company’s armour plates have multiple curves for a better fit. Anderson said Rand Armour also manufacture plates for women.
Rand Armour offers two different levels of protection in their range of armour plates: Multi-thread level withstands 7.62 x 51 mm lead ball, 5.56 x 54 mm lead ball, 5.56 x 45 mm SS109 green tip, and 7.62 x 39 mm mild-steel core at a distance of 15 metres. The Dragunov level withstands 7.62 x 54 R mm steel core rounds – tested at a range of 15 metres.
Apart from chest and back plates, Rand Armour also makes armour side plates.
Rand Armour has been in existence for around five years, but for most of its life the company has been working on perfecting its armoured plates. Anderson said: “We pride ourselves in our innovative product designs. Through ongoing R&D we are constantly pushing the boundaries of ballistic armour and achieving new levels of protection.”
The company launched its products at the recent Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition outside Pretoria.
