One person died and another was injured when their car crashed into the back of a Ratel armoured personnel carrier that was driving on the N1 highway in Johannesburg yesterday.
The accident happened at 6:15 am on Sunday morning, according to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), which said the civilian vehicle, a white hatchback, drove into the back of the Ratel on the N1 south next to the William Nicol Drive off ramp.
The APC vehicle was part of a convoy of military vehicles from 43 South African Brigade (43 SA Bde) heading to the South African Army Combat Training Centre, in the Northern Cape, the SANDF said.
“It is with great sadness that the driver of the civilian vehicle passed on whilst the passenger was injured. The South African National Defence Force would like to convey its sincere condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased, and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.”
It is not clear why the accident happened but speed may have been a factor.
