War Graves Society fundraiser at Edenvale MOTH Shellhole

1632

The SA War Graves Society (SAWG) on Saturday hosts another of its regular fundraising efforts with Edenvale’s Dickie Fritz MOTH Shellhole the venue.

The Society is entirely dependent on contributions and own fundraising efforts to refurbish neglected war graves and memorial sites. One of these is the Brakpan historical site which SAWG notes should rather be called a “wreckage of remembrance” than a Garden of Remembrance.
“When the memorial was built it must have been impressive but it is now a travesty. It is almost totally destroyed and nothing has been done with the memorial apparently abandoned.”

Funds raised on Saturday via a fete and parade with a militaria market, display of vintage military vehicles and classic cars will go to, among others, making the Brakpan memorial presentable again. Other attractions at the near East Rand Shellhole include a parade by sea cadets from TS Rook and the attendance of retired colonel Wynand du Toit formerly of 4 Reconnaissance Regiment who will on hand to autograph copies of his book – “Soldaat”.

Other sites SAWG refurbishes and maintains include the Johanna van der Merwe Voortrekker Monument, the German war graves at Baviaanspoort and the Bronkhorstspruit Memorial.
