The United Nations in Liberia will auction off 65 vehicles and other equipment belonging to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
The 65 vehicles up for public auction include Toyota Land Cruisers and Hilux pickup trucks, Nissan pickups, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha motorcycles, and construction machines such as bulldozers, road graders and compactors.
Two public auctions are taking place this month, on March 24 and 31, in the first time the UNHCR is auctioning vehicles in a public sale, with all registered buyers welcome to bid, according to a document on the Liberian government’s website.
This exercise comes at the height of prevailing ‘sustained peace’ in Liberia following its decade long civil crisis, reports The Observer, and the departure of various non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The UNHCR this month closed a refugee camp in Liberia for Ivorian refugees who had fled their country following the political violence their several years ago.
