Pretoria-based Redeployable Camp Systems South Africa (RCSSA) was awarded a R64-million contract for a turnkey redeployable mess facility for the SA National Defence Force (SANDF). The contract runs over a 25-month period.
Deliverables includes a mess hall, 32m by 10m in size, with vestibules on the long sides. The mess is constructed of a modular steel or aluminium frame, covered by durable, flame-retardant PVC fabric, similar to the company’s other large modular systems. Innovative guttering and a raised floor allow for the structure to be erected in high rainfall areas with muddy or uneven ground.
According to RCSSA programme manager Richard Shaw, the new generation mess contract includes a high-throughput dishwasher, storage containers and a heavy-duty silent generator. The 5,5-ton generator housed in a 6m ISO container automatically starts up in the event of a power failure and is run from a 1 000-litre diesel tank.
“As with all modular systems RCSSA provides, everything is essentially ‘plug-and-play’ with pre-wired electrical distribution boards for mains power distribution via harnesses to power outlets and LED lighting throughout the mess facility,” he explained. “It is important to note that, seven enterprise supplier development (ESD) companies have been brought on board to assist RCSSA in this project.”
The entire mess facility was designed for C-130 air transportability to enable rapid deployment anywhere in the country or into the rest of Africa.
RCSSA recently transferred its steel work facility from Port Elizabeth to its 25 000 m2 factory outside Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal. This enables the company to manufacture all its steel products and expandable containers in-house, along with PVC and other fabrics by means of the revolutionary Eton system.
The company supplies numerous customers worldwide, including the United Nations, and is certified ISO 9001: 2015 for meeting all requirements for a quality management system.
