Nigerian police receive new vehicles

The Nigerian subsidiary of Chinese automobile manufacturer Guangzhou Automobile Group Motor (GAC Motor) has delivered 150 GA3S ‘Trump-Chi” sedans for use by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in metropolitan Abuja.

The vehicles form the second and final batch in a consignment bought from the GAC Motor dealership in Lagos and donated to the Nigerian police by the Aliko Dangote Foundation in 2015.

The fleet was commissioned into service by Nigerian Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo in a ceremony held on June 2 in Lagos. Osinbajo praised Dangote Foundation chairman Aliko Dangote for empowering the police in the discharge of its security mandate.

Nigerian police Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris Kpotum said the partnership with the Dangote Foundation was one of several public-private partnerships meant to help the government deliver essential public services.
“Considering the challenges government faces in meeting the needs of the population in the delivery of health, education and security services, such Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) (as with Dangote Foundation) have been developed,” said Kpotum.

Dangote Foundation Chairman Aliko Dangote said through the donation, his organisation was deepening a long-established relationship with the Nigerian security sector.
“Today, we are deepening our intervention in security with the donation of these 150 fully-kitted, operational vehicles to the police force. They will support the police in crime surveillance, crime prevention and the promotion of law and order,” Dangote said.

GAC Motor President Yu Jun said the bulk purchase of the police cars was a further recognition and affirmation of the quality and safety of its vehicles in the African market. GAC has introduced a variety of its signature models to Nigeria and gained many bulk purchase orders from local government departments.

Four GAC vehicle models have been introduced to the Nigerian market since the local plant, which assembles semi-knockdown kits, opened in December 2014. These include the GA3S, GS4 and GS8. Among other design specifications, GAC models feature an elevated chassis which allows for higher ground clearance.
