Chemical defence funding doubles

A new tranche of funding from the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) doubles the money spent researching chemical defence means for the South African National Defence Force. Having spent some R39.5 million on the subject between 2008 and 2011, a new R52.7 million award takes total spending to R92 278 130.

The SAMHS, which is responsible for the chemical, biological and radiation (CBR) protection of SANDF personnel also paid for capital equipment worth R745 145.16.

Protechnik Laboratories is a research and development institute performing project work in the field of chemical and biological defence on behalf of the SANDF. The Armscor 2009/10 annual report notes Protechnik completed Project Romulus, a Defence Research & Development Board programme as well as work for the SAMHS “on time and within budget.” The company also provided CBR training to the police ahead of the 2010 FIFA soccer World Cup.
