Earlier this year Armscor awarded a R38 million contract valued to Pretoria-based Redeployable Camp Systems South Africa (RCSSA) for “simple and expandable” containers for the SA National Defence Force (SANDF).

The contract, part of the SANDF’s transportable camp systems requirement, runs over 33 months.

RCSSA group programme manager Richard Shaw explained the term “simple containers” is somewhat of a misnomer, as the containers are not that simple. They range from a bar, air-conditioning, canteen and a barbershop to a paymaster’s office, stores, security lockers and even a gym.
“RCSSA is renowned for innovative redeployable and C-130 air transportable camp systems, having provided clients worldwide with anything from turnkey soft-walled camps to our expandable HERCon hard-walled containers. These are essentially 6m ISO containers that can be expanded to triple the floor space – part of which forms the basis of this contract.”

The containers are pre-wired with electrical distribution boards for mains power distribution by means of ready-made harnesses to power outlets and for low-energy consumption LED lighting. This enables the ‘plug-and-play’ system that RCSSA employs all across their camp systems.

In the bar, canteen and barbershop, all of which require water, a pre-installed water reticulation system is provided.

The water-based containers are connected to a quarter tank variant with a 6m footprint providing potable water for use and a tank for grey water disposal.

RCSSA manufactures all its steel products and expandable containers in-house at a 25 000m2 factory outside Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal. This facility also manufactures RCSSA’s PVC and other fabrics by means of the high-volume “assembly-line” Eton production system.

The company’s customers include the United Nations and it now boasts ISO 9001: 2015 certification meeting all requirements for a quality management system.
