Mr K A Sinclair (COPE-NC) to ask the Minister of Science and Technology:
(1) Whether the roll-out for the South African bid to host the establishment of the Square Kilometre Array Telescope in the Northern Cape has been successful; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?”
(1)The decision to construct the Square Kilometre Array Telescope in either Australia or Africa will only be taken, by an international committee, in 2012. South Africa and its African partners are providing the necessary documentation and data that will demonstrate that Africa can be the future home of the Square Kilometre Array Telescope. In particular, good progress is being made on the development and construction of MeerKAT in the Northern Cape, our African precursor telescope to the Square Kilometre Array Telescope. Completion of the MeerKAT will demonstrate South Africa’s ability to manage the engineering aspects of the Square Kilometre Array and to conduct meaningful science with it.
