Parliamentary Question: DoP: Monitoring build-ups of arms

1138

QUESTION NO 85

Mr M M Swathe (DA) to ask the Minister of Police:

Whether, with reference to the recent seizure of arms stockpiles in Gauteng, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape, he has put any measures in place to specifically monitor the build-up of arms; if not, (a) why not and (b) how will his department prevent such build-ups in future; if so, what are the relevant details?

REPLY:
1The recent discovery of weapons caches is due to Crime Intelligence successfully targeting the flow and caching of firearms. Crime Intelligence will continue to work on this area.

There has been, and will continue to be, a concerted focus on a more holistic approach to firearm control and management. This involves better control and management of both private firearms and those used by SAPS as well as on the removal of illegal weapons from society. As various measures become more effective, it is envisaged that arms caches and finds (as in the recent past), will decrease due to the pro-active attention given to these matters.
