Parliamentary Question: DoP: ATM bombing

3199. Mr M M Swathe (DA) to ask the Minister of Police:

Whether his department has identified a strategy to combat the rise of bombings of automated teller machines (ATMs), as indicated in the recent crime statistics report; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

The DPCI has an operational strategy to address the threat of ATM bombings. The strategy entails the establishment of provincial task teams to specifically focus on combating and investigating ATM bombings. All ATM related incidents and arrests are reported to Head Office: Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation. Since the implementation of the strategy we have succeeded significantly in reducing ATM attacks and the figures for the first six months of this financial year show a decline of 17%..
