1243

Mr M R Sonto (ANC) to ask the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans:

Whether (a) her departments and (b) the entities reporting to her have implemented any energy-saving (i) practices or (ii) devices for buildings, offices and boardrooms in the 2010-11 financial year; if not, why not, in each case; if so, what are the relevant details in each case?

RESPONSE
a)As a general rule all division within the Department should implement energy-saving measures (practices, devices for buildings, offices and boardrooms. The Department and the entities reporting to the Minister are aware of such measures.

The DoD is part of an energy-saving campaign which include implementation energy-efficiency awareness programmes and energy-saving measures and the completion of the DoD Annual Environment Management Report with particular reference to energy efficiency. There are 21 285 buildings with the associated infrastructure situated on almost a. 420 000 ha of state owned land and private land respectively that are used by the DoD and entities associated with it. However, the responsibility for the implementation of energy-saving lies with the Department of Public Works and building owners.
b)(i-ii) Most of the energy saving devices were implemented at regional and local level in collaboration with the DPW structures at those levels.
