Sisulu to vist DRC Sunday

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Lindiwe Sisulu will on Sunday travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo to meet her counterpart Charles Nsimba to discuss preparations for the 2011 Presidential elections and other issues of mutual interest.

The minister will also be briefed on logistical and security arrangements from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in support of the DRC presidential elections, BuaNews reports.

The SANDF has more than 1000 soldiers deployed in the DRC as peacekeepers under the auspices of the United Nations. Some of them will not return home for Christmas, as they will remain in the DRC to maintain peace and stability post November elections.

President Zuma, as the Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, has also tasked Correctional Services Minister Mapisa Nqakula to lead the SADC Observer Mission that is already on the ground in the DRC.

The minister will be accompanied by the SANDF Chief Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Derrick Mgwebi.
