South Africa and Mozambique are today discussing joint naval and air patrols within their respective territorial waters.
The item is up for discussion at today`s inaugural meeting of South Africa – Mozambique Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security “due to international sea vessels rerouting to use the two countries` waters in the light of the high rate of piracy activities in the horn of Africa.”
Other agenda items include border crimes such as human trafficking, gun running and drug smuggling, says SA defence ministry spokesman Sam Mkhwanazi.
The spokesman adds that the SA delegation to the talks in Pretoria will be led by Minister of Defence Charles Nqakula.
With him is Minister for Intelligence Siyabonga Cwele, Minister of Home Affairs Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Deputy Minister of Correctional Services Lorretta Jacobus.
