German military unit ready to deploy to Mali

Soldiers from the Bundeswehr’s 12th Panzer Brigade are ready to deploy to the United Nations mission in Mali (Minusma) next month after completing mission readiness training.

The Bundeswehr said that last week the 12th Panzer Brigade completed pre-deployment preparation with a two-week training exercise. The focus was on reconnaissance forces.

Around 240 soldiers will deploy to Mali in March on a six-month rotation. In Mali, they will be equipped with the Eagle IV command and control vehicle and the Fuchs armoured personnel carrier.

The Bundeswehr noted that Mali is now one of the most dangerous foreign missions of the Bundeswehr. Violent clashes between the population groups and various terrorist groups are the main challenges for the soldiers. The core task of the German contribution in Gao is intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for UN forces.
