State defence and security contracting agency Armscor is seeking quad bikes and SIG Sauer P226 pistols for the South Africa Special Forces.
The acquisition agency issued a tender for the “Procurement of SIG Sauer P226 Pistols,” on 15 December 2016 with a closing date of 8 February 2017.
The tender document requests a total of 70 P226 9×19 mm double action pistols, each to be supplied with contrast night sights, two 15 round magazines, and a transport case. In addition, the tender calls for the supply of 150 steel magazines with a capacity of 15 rounds and 150 polymer magazines, also of 15 round capacity.
Armscor said the pistols are being procured for SA Special Forces.
Armscor has sought P226 pistols in the past – in June 2015 it issued a tender for the supply of P226s and in 2011 sought P226 components.
The P226 pistol can be chambered in 9 mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG and .22 Long Rifle calibres. It comes in a variety of different variants and is in service with a large number of police and military forces around the world, including the US military.
In a separate tender issued on 16 January, Armscor issued a tender for the supply and delivery of ten 4×4 quad bikes. Closing date of the tender is 8 February 2017 and delivery address is “The Office Commanding, Special Forces Supply Unit, Wallmanstal.
The tender document stipulates the vehicles must be single cylinder, four stroke models with an engine capacity at least 550 cc. The bikes must be water cooled but can be manual or automatic.
The bikes are to be olive green or olive drab in colour and a black out switch to switch off brake lights at night. Other requirements include hand guards to protect the operator in bushy terrain, run flat tyres, a winch and tow bar.
Ground clearance must be between 27 and 29 cm. Weight should be between 355 and 360 kg and towing capacity needs to be between 500 and 560 kg. The bikes should have seating for two in tandem and steel reinforced racks able to carry at least 300 kg.
