PMP restarts apprentice training

Denel subsidiary Pretoria Metal Pressings (PMP) says the apprenticeships of the first eight Fitter &Turner apprentices at its re-established Training Centre are progressing well.

The centre re-opened in April last year and saw between 850 and 950 employees attend one or other training course or intervention. Apprentice training resumed this April with eight candidates, including PMP`s first black female apprentice Fitter & Turner, reporting for training.

The facility replaces one shut in 2004 when Denel decided to centralise training at a venue on the East Rand

PMP CE Carel Wolhuter says it soon became clear that due to that facility`s considerable distance from the western side of Pretoria, “the intake of apprentices from these areas dropped sharply.

“The availability of young technically qualified persons with suitable skills for PMP`s factories, stopped, and it became clear that technical training at PMP had to be re-established,” he adds.
