Zuma’s pay now R2.3m p.a.

2239

President Jacob Zuma has approved a 5% salary increase for public office bearers that include Members of Parliament and judges, taking his own salary to R2 367 467 per year. The increase is 2% below that proposed by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers. This contrasts with the entry-level payment of R49 008 a year paid to a soldier, airman or sailor.

Chairman Judge Willie Seriti recommended that a minister earn R1 845 639 and a deputy minister R1 519 923. His commission also recommended that the current speaker of the National Assembly be paid R2 171 356, the deputy speaker R1 519 923 and the Leader of the Opposition R1 194 207. The deputy chief whip of both the ruling ANC and the chief whip of official opposition would have received R977 148. An ordinary Member of Parliament would have received R818 166 had Zuma accepted Seriti’s proposal.

In the brief statement released by presidential spokesman Harold Maloka, Zuma thanked the Commission for its work and said he had made his decision after “taking into consideration the recommendations of the Commission and other relevant factors.” The salary hikes will take effect retrospectively from April.

By comparison, a government junior cleaner, messenger or security guard earns R5417 per month or about R 70 426 a year. A private security guard earns R1999.62 per month (R23 995.44 per annum) and a truck driver R4652 a month or R55 824 a year. (Sunday Times, August 29, 2010) The CE of the Department of Transport’s Road Traffic Management Agency earns about R1.2 million a year bracket, equivalent to a departmental director general (Level 16, Senior Management Service Grade D).
